Here's a look at the colorful hike Amie and I took at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park near Onamia on Saturday. The fall leaves were beautiful.

Mille Lacs Mathis State Park is located just a few miles northwest of Onamia, just off Highway 169. The park features over thirty miles of trails, along with nature programs, camping, swimming, a 100 foot observation tower, historic sites, cross-country skiing, and more.

When Amie and I were there on Saturday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources had the area's leaves at 50% to 75% of peak color.

This Past Weekend at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

The Minnesota DNR describes the park as:

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is in the Mille Lacs Landscape Region. The park is primarily a second-growth forest of aspen, birch, maple, oak, and other northern hardwoods. Wetlands are abundant in the eskers on which the park is located. A few isolated remnant stands of conifers provide diversity to the landscape and a hint of what the forest looked like a century ago.

We'll be back for more at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park. It has risen to the upper portion of our favorite state parks list after just visiting it for the first time this weekend. On to more exploring!
