Minnesotans May Need Passports To Board Airplanes Next Year [POLL]

Minnesota still isn't in compliance with the federal Real ID Act--with a looming deadline of January 2018. If we can't get our poop in a group, Minnesotans may have to provide a passport in order to board airplanes in 2018. It could also affect Minnesotans who apply for social security benefits.

In addition to what's already required to be provided on your ID, you'll also need "proof of the person's social security account number or verification that the person is not eligible for a social security account number," according to the Department of Homeland Security. ID's will also be required to have "machine readable technology" or something like the RFID chip in credit cards.

So, what's the hold up? Well, some republicans and democrats feels that the information Minnesotans are already required to provide on their ID's is enough. Anymore information than that seems like a government overreach.

I think the federal Real ID Act seems a little invasive to be honest. We've gotten along just fine to this point without it. What do they really need that information for anyway? I really don't like it. Maybe the legislature isn't that crazy.
