Lawns are looking a little brown lately, but, don't be tempted to water everyday. It could end up costing you some serious cash.
Several cities in central Minnesota have adopted the odd & even water conservation plan. If you've never heard of it before, you've come to the right place. Hopefully we can save you from a potential fine.
Homes that are in cities and towns with the odd and even plan only allow homeowners and renters to water their lawns every other day. An easy way to tell if it's your day to water your lawn is to check your house number. If your house number is odd, you can water your lawn on odd numbered days. If your home is an even number, then you can water on even numbered days.
If you're an odd house number watering on an even numbered day and vice versa, you are technically in violation of your city ordinance. Several people have in-ground sprinkler systems that are on automatic timers set to water every day. I've actually seen several homes on my own block with automatic sprinklers that water every day at the same time in the morning. These homes are in violation and run the risk of a potential fine.
This also typically applies to water usage in kiddie pools, etc. If you're planning to fill up your child's swimming pool, make sure you're doing it on the right day. The same goes for running in the sprinkler.
So, how do you know if you're living in a city with the odd and even water conservation plan? We've got a list for you below. Also, if your city isn't on this list, that doesn't mean there isn't a local ordinance. Check with your municipality before you water.
- Sartell & St. Stephen
- St. Cloud & Waite Park
- Sauk Rapids & Rice
- St. Joseph
The fine varies depending on where you're living. Typically, the first offense is a warning. The second offence could cost you roughly $50 and the third offense could cost as much as $250. If you have a well on your property, you're going to want to make sure to register it with the city so that you're not fined for watering on the wrong day.
