Twenty-five years ago today -- on Thursday, October 31,1991 -- Minnesota was walloped by what has become known as the 'Halloween Blizzard' -- dumping more than 30 inches in some areas. Any complaints about today's temperatures in the 50s for trick-or-treating?Wintery weather was in the forecast for that day, but nothing like the snow that eventually fell across the state. A Winter Storm Watch was issued early that morning, but no one expected theses storm totals:

  • Duluth:  36.9"
  • Twin Cities:  28.4"
  • Hinckley:  24.0"
  • St. Cloud:  12.1"
  • Brainerd:  11.0"

Snow drifts of 6 to 10 feet developed in some areas, and more than 900 schools and businesses were closed across Minnesota on Friday, November 1st.

According to the National Weather Service:

One common myth about Minnesota's '91 'Halloween Blizzard' should be dispelled here. This was not the same storm that went on to be the "Perfect Storm" that was the basis of a book and movie.

Kids across Minnesota rejoice! Halloween 2016 will be one where snow suits are not required underneath your costumes.

Have fun!  Be safe!  Happy Halloween!
