Hunting

Some local hunters are speaking out against a proposed ban on lead shotgun pellets in certain parts of Minnesota.

It is hard to explain how a person develops a passion for certain outdoor activities. As most of us know, it does happen.

My very first snow goose hunt took place 30 years ago in New Mexico near the Elephant Butte impoundment on the Rio Grande River. My brother and I set up three hundred homemade decoys on a flyway thousands of birds used daily as they moved off of the water and flew out to feed.

It was four years ago that I planted a small acre and a half food plot on some CRP land I own. At that time, the pheasant numbers were still fairly strong. However, I knew it was only a matter of time before Mother Nature would send an old fashioned winter our way and the bird population would crash.

I think it's a great thing when one can broaden their horizon's and try out something new.  You can't truly judge anything until you've tried it.  There aren't many things that I would say I will never do again, but I've got one thing that just isn't going to happen...like ever.

The great white hunter. A man to be revered or reviled, depending on your environmental leanings. But it's undeniable that this version of getting close to nature on a hunting stand in the woods was NOT in this guy's plans.

If you are one of the 500,000 hunters who are expected to be out this deer hunting season, it looks like a "normal" start to the season in regards to the weather. Normal high temperatures are generally in the 40s and that is what we can expect over the weekend...
