St. Paul’s 2022 World Cup Qualifier Match in February is Not a Joke
Last Wednesday Minnesota soccer fans were thrilled to hear that Minnesota United's home stadium Allianz Field would play host to a 2022 World Cup Qualifier match between the USA men's national team and Honduras.
That excitement quickly turned into disbelief, however, when they learned what date the match was set for -- February 2.
"World. Cup. Qualifier," posted Minnesota United FC on social media. "Allianz Field will host the USMNT vs. Honduras on February 2. Yes, February 2 in Saint Paul."
As way of reminder, Allianz Field is an outdoor, open-air stadium, a fact which hasn't gone unnoticed by soccer fans.
"This has to be a joke…right?" asked one fan on Facebook.
"So we're going to have a southern country, not used to seeing snow, and a team that is ok with playing in snow compete against each other in an uncovered stadium IN FEBRUARY and expect it to be a fair game?" asked another incredulously.
"That is a really stupid idea," commented a third, bluntly. "It could (very) easily be -20. It almost surely will not be above +20."
"Will they be playing in snowmobile suits?" joked another.
"I have played soccer in the winter in Minnesota," added yet another. "It is NOT like the summer game. The ground is concrete, the ball is wooden, you'll need turf shoes, not cleats, and you better have good XC ski racing clothes, screw shorts!"
According to one fan in the comment section, the recorded temperature and weather conditions on February 2 the past 10 years were:
2020: 25 and cloudy
2019: 41 and clear
2018: 32 and clear
2017: 5 and clear
2016: 14 and clear
2015: 30 and snow
2014: 12 and cloudy
2013: 13 and sunny
2012: 10 and cloudy
2011: 36 and cloudy
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to run November 21 through December 18 in Quatar. The tournament is monumental in that it marks the first time the World Cup has ever taken place in the Middle East and Arab World and -- due to Quatar's extreme summer heat -- the first time the tournament has ever not been held in June and July.
Minnesota becomes the 21st state to host a World Cup Qualifier match. Due to high demand, a weighted random draw for tickets will be utilized, additional information available here.
