The buzz around the Twin Cities this week has to do with two cafes in Minneapolis eliminating tipping for their servers. Go News reported that the cafes decided to raise the pay of their servers from $11.40 an hour to $15 and they are now giving them benefits. But how are they going to raise the pay of each employee? To make up for it they raised the menu item prices by 15%. Common Roots Cafe and Butter Bakery Cafe are both making this change and have signs outside their stores letting customers know that tipping is no longer necessary. They don't want their employees to have to depend on tips and think they deserve a fair wage.

As someone who used to work for tips I am not sure how I feel about this. Slow business nights it would have been nice, but on busy days I would sometimes make equivalent to $20 an hour.
