Over 25% of Minnesota’s Snow Cover Has Melted This Week
That sun has some power behind it. Highs might just be in the upper 30s, but it has been enough for the snow to be melting like crazy across the state. I really started to notice it when I had my dog out on walks this week. Tuesday there were areas of the sidewalk that were still covered, and by Thursday there was measurable grass poking out along the concrete.
The Minnesota DNR measures snow coverage across the state on a weekly basis, and on Thursday, February 18th there were about 8 inches of snow on the ground across Central Minnesota.
By Thursday, February 25th there were areas in Central Minnesota down to roughly 4 inches, and in southwestern Minnesota that was down to 0 inches.
Minnesota meteorologist Sven Sundgaard shared that overall the state has lost about 25% of its snow cover since Sunday, February 21st:
Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will bring us another day of melting, but the potential for some snow overnight into Sunday (less than an inch), and temperatures will be in the 20s Sunday and Monday. But don't worry, highs will be back up in the 40s by Tuesday. We will keep you updated on the weather on our free mobile app, be sure you have it opted in for weather alerts.
