New Professional League Looks At Growing
IS IT TIME FOR EXPANSION?
Has the PWHL had the success they need with six inaugural teams last year, to expand the league in 2025?
The PWHL's initial teams had no team names last season; they were simply named by their homes in Toronto, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, New York, and Minnesota. Minnesota's name is The Minnesota Frost and were the first champions of the PWHL. This year's slogan is 'Feel The Freeze.'
THE TEAMS
In September of this year, all of those teams received their official names:
- Montréal Victoire
- Ottawa Charge
- Toronto Sceptres
- Boston Fleet
- Minnesota Frost
- New York Sirens
EXCITED ABOUT NEW MASCOTS
Fans are excitedly waiting on the announcement of mascots, which I believe are also on the way. Minnesota was the first champion of the PWHL. This year's slogan is 'Feel The Freeze.'
The PWHL schedule season starts in December, and they are hoping to expand by adding two more franchises to begin as early as next year. Is it too soon?
AMY SCHEER SAYS THE TIME TO ASK IS NOW
According to an online article, Amy Scheer, Senior Vice President of business operations for PWHL said, "Expansion is the first question we get asked, at every event we're at. It just seems like the right time to look into it. And I think once we have these conversations and understand what the real interest is, we'll understand if this is the right time or not. But it was the right time to put the word out."
According to the article, expansion could attract more of the best women's players in the world.
WHAT DOES THE PWHL NEED TO EXPAND?
They are looking at certain criteria to expand, including market size, available facilities, economic opportunity and sponsorships from corporations, as well as youth hockey and fans.
Do you think the PWHL is ready for expansion? The league is working on proposals and hoping that they will have decisions coming as early as 2025.
