I was surprised to learn that many of Minnesota's largest shopping centers seem to share the same stores, namely one store, with loose "Minnesota-ties" as one of it's anchor stores. Would you believe that the store that many of Minnesota's largest shopping centers share is...Macy's?

Macy's, which filled the whole left in Minnesota malls from the closing of Dayton's, can be found in 6 of the top 10 largest Twin Cities shopping centers, including the biggest one of all, the Mall of America in Bloomington.

The biggest Minnesota malls that have Macy's as an anchor store are:

  • Mall of America - Bloomington
  • Southdale Shopping Center - Edina
  • Rosedale Shopping Center - Roseville
  • Ridgedale Center - Minnetonka
  • Burnsville Center - Burnsville
  • Maplewood Mall - Maplewood

The remaining shopping centers in the top-10 for size in the Twin Cities all have anchors other than Macy's.

  • Eden Prairie Center - Eden Prairie (Van Maur, Scheels, Target)
  • Northtown Mall - Blaine (Becker Furniture Outlet, Best Buy, Hobby Lobby)
  • Riverdale Village - Coon Rapids (Costco, Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods)
  • Fountains at Arbor Lakes - Maple Grove (Costco, Marshall's, Lowe's)

According to the Macy's website, the store has 11 locations in Minnesota, including one right here in St. Cloud at the mall.

Macy's has a loose association with Minnesota, according to online resources:

"Macy's indirectly acquired Dayton's through the purchase of Marshall Field's in 2004, which was then owned by May Department Stores. In 2005, May Department Stores merged with Macy's, and the remaining Marshall Field's stores became Macy's department stores."

So the next time you are headed off to the mall in just about any part of Minnesota for some shopping take a look around and see if you can spot a Macy's.
