Minnesota’s Secret Tie to an ’80’s Cult Classic’
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM 'THE BREAKFAST CLUB?'
Remember the movie 'The Breakfast Club?" The movie was from 1985, my senior year in high school.
I have to say I've never really thought much about that movie for quite some time; or the statue that stands in the library where the students are being held in detention; but what I thought was cool, is that recently I've learned there is a mini sculpture of what is known as 'Standing Figure: Knife Edge' by Henry Moore here in Minnesota, which is the statue that is in the middle of the library on The Breakfast Club.
THE CULT CLASSIC
The Breakfast Club is a cult classic coming out in February of 1985. The movie is about 5 high school kids who are very different from each other and have to spend a full day in detention on a Saturday in the school library in a fictitious suburb of Chicago, called Shermer, Illinois.
The Standing Figure: Knife Edge sculpture that's featured in the movie, is a replica of the incredibly popular original, although some of you may have never really noticed it before; like me.
But this statue is SO popular, it seems like you can find this statue everywhere!
There are Standing Figure: Knife Edge sculptures in many different locations worldwide.
THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART
According to a Facebook post from The National Gallery of Art, Henry Moore said, "I like a sculpture in the open air. I prefer my sculptures to be seen among the trees and the sky." Henry Moore is one of the most important British artists of the 20th century.
If you noticed the statue in the movie, and want to see what it looks like in an outdoor setting as it was intended, you have that opportunity here in Minnesota. A mini statue is located in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, along with over 40 other works of public art.
Originally, the sculpture was cast in two full-size versions; one in 1961 and the other in 1976. You can see versions of this statue in many locations, including:
- One Maritime Plaza in San Fransisco, California
- Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California
- Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in Minnesota
- Botanischer Garten Grugapark in Essen, Germany
- Kreeger Museum in Washington, DC.
