Minnesotans Need To Learn A Few New Names
REMEMBER WHEN PLUTO WAS A PLANET?
When I went to school as a kid, I learned that Pluto was a planet. Years later, when my kids were in school, Pluto had just been taken out of the planetary line-up and was instead called a dwarf planet, so it no longer counted. This feels like that kind of change.
THE GULF OF...AMERICA?
The Gulf of Mexico has officially been renamed "The Gulf of America," and the executive order called for all federal government maps and documents to be changed to reflect its new name.

GOOGLE MAPS SAYS SO
So if you go to Google Maps, you will see that it indeed shows up as 'Gulf of America.'
The thing is, other countries are not really calling it the "Gulf of America,' it's just us.
If it's not going to be called the Gulf of America by everyone around the globe, I don't understand changing it.
I have another question. If Canada wanted to rename the Gulf of America, could they call it something completely different? Will Mexico still call it 'The Gulf of Mexico?"
DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
I guess my question is, if we aren't all on the same page, what does it matter if Americans are the only ones on the planet required to call it something different?
INDEED IT HAS BEEN CHANGED
According to a CNN article, Google said that only United States users of Google Maps will see the change. It says when "official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too."
WHAT ABOUT DENALI?
Make note, that the Gulf of America isn't the only change that has been made. The name Mount McKinley is back, for our nation's highest peak. I guess it's a good thing that we don't have school books anymore, and that everything can be changed digitally. Hopefully, these changes won't cost us much.
Mount McKinley was renamed Denali in 2015 by former President Barack Obama, to honor the native population of the region.
The reason for changing these names? President Trump says the changes are to 'honor American greatness.'
DO YOU FEEL THIS CHANGE WAS NECESSARY?
To be clear, no other country has to change these names on their maps. They can call it what they want.
Do these changes matter? If they aren't worldwide changes, why make them at all?
