Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has issued a consumer advisory warning after discovering a popular brand of hemp-derived THC gummies contains over 20 times more THC than advertised.

The OCM said the advisory was prompted by a report of someone having an adverse health event after eating the gummies. Lab tests confirmed that the THC content far exceeded the legal and labeled amounts, and the flavor also didn’t match what was advertised.

The alert focuses on the “Oreoz” flavor of BAK8D brand delta-9 THC gummies, which were found to contain more than 100 milligrams of THC per gummy, despite being labeled as 5 milligrams.

The state’s legal limit for hemp-based edible products is 5 mg per gummy and 50 mg per package.

“It is important that we know when a consumer has a bad experience with a product,” said Eric Taubel, interim director of the Office of Cannabis Management. “This is an important part of our responsibility to ensure public health and safety, consumer confidence, and market integrity.”

While the advisory names the “Oreoz” flavor specifically, the advisory says all BAK8D brand delta-9 THC gummies may be affected. The products were distributed in Minnesota through tobacco shops, hemp and CBD retailers, and possibly through online sales.

Overconsuming THC, especially via edibles, can lead to adverse health effects, particularly in individuals with pre-existing health conditions, OCM says. Because edible cannabis takes longer to kick in and lasts longer than smoking, people are more likely to ingest too much, believing the product isn’t working.

The OCM says the mislabeled gummies pose a serious threat to public health. State officials are urging anyone who purchased BAK8D brand gummies to stop using them immediately and report any adverse effects.
