You can ice fish for free January 19 - 21 if you're accompanied by a child under the age of 15. It's the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' annual Take A Kid Ice Fishing Weekend.

The DNR is holding a special event on Half Moon Landing on the Mississippi River backwaters near Kellogg. They'll provide all of the ice fishing equipment you'll need from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Space for the event is limited. You'll need to reserve your spot by emailing sara.holger@state.mn.us or by calling 507-312-2308.

Many other fishing events will be held throughout the state in conjunction with the free fishing weekend. The DNR is also waiving the stamp requirement if you're fishing with a kid.

You can find a list of the right clothing to keep you and your child warm, safety gear for the trip and other helpful information on the DNR's website.
