The State of Minnesota began sending out absentee ballots for the 2020 general election last week. I received mine in the mail yesterday, and there's still time to get yours.

To get a Minnesota absentee ballot sent to you -- you don't need to be absent, or actually need any reason at all. You can request a ballot for the primary, general election, or both on the Minnesota Secretary of State's website.

I have been voting at home, by mail, with an absentee ballot for many years. I love being able to research candidates on my own time, with the ballot right in front of me. You can request an absentee ballot at any time -- except on Election Day.

You don't even need to already be registered to vote to request an absentee ballot, but you do need:

  1. To be eligible to register and vote in Minnesota.
  2. A valid email address.
  3. Your Minnesota issued driver's license number (or other Minnesota issued ID).
  4. And the last four digits of your social security number.

That's pretty much it. I requested my 2020 absentee ballot online over the weekend. I don't think it took 90 seconds -- and it doesn't cost a dime.

If you don't have an email address, you can request your absentee ballot by filling out a paper form which you can print HERE.

After you fill out your ballot, you just drop it in the mail. Just make sure the postmark is dated no later than Election Day.

To be eligible to vote in Minnesota, you must:

  • Be 18 years old or older by Election Day.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Have lived in Minnesota for the immediate 20 days prior to Election Day.
  • Have any felony conviction record discharged, expired or completed.
  • Not be under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights.
  • Not have been ruled legally incompetent by a court of law.

Now let's get voting!
