Here’s What the Stearns County 911 Call Center Looked Like this Week
Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week! We're celebrating the people who take your 9-1-1 emergency phone calls.
Typically, when you make an emergency call, you never actually get to see the person who is on the other side of the phone. It's kind of like radio, you just assume what you think they look like. They're always very calm, cool and collected.
But, they're also just people like you and me who live in the community and like to have a fun time at work too, even though they've got a very serious and sometimes stressful job.
If you've needed to make a 9-1-1 call this week, you probably had no idea the call center was completely decked out celebrating a week all about them!
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office shared an awesome photo on their official Facebook page of the dispatch center workers completely decked out in fun vacation attire. They were sporting grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and lays.
It looked like they were all having a great time! It's awesome. I can totally relate to this working on the radio because you're just a voice. People have no idea what's actually going on behind the mic sometimes and in their case, the phone. [I may or may not be writing this while wearing my pajamas and slippers at work.]
According to the sheriff's office, "there are 104 PSPAs (Public Safety Answering Points) in the State of Minnesota. Stearns County is the 10th busiest overall in the state based on call volume."
That's a lot. I think it's safe to say they're a busy bunch. They definitely deserve all of the celebration.
Happy Telecommunicator's Week! Thanks for all you do. If I ever need to call 9-1-1 in the future, I will be wondering if the person on the other end of the phone is sporting a fun hat or Hawaiian skirt. I guess I'll never know!!
