My grandma used to make all kinds of cookies this time of year.  Ginger was always my favorite, my brother loved the ones with the peanut butter cup in the middle and my mom's favorite was her sugar cookies.  My mom, sister and I tried making sugar cookies last night and we need help!

My mom doesn't have my grandma's sugar cookie recipe so she went in search of an older one thinking it would be good.  You can clearly see the ingredients even though the instructions are cut off.

I would say everything is pretty self explanatory except for the cream.  It doesn't specify what you use, so I did a little searching and someone used cream of tarter with this recipe. Is that a proper ingredient or is there something else that would work better?

We made the dough on Monday and put it in the fridge, which may be another source of the problem.  The dough was really crumbly so we ended up using a good amount of the confectioners sugar.  Once they baked and we sampled the first batch, they were really sugary.  I worked a few for a second batch and they turned out a little better, but they're still nowhere near as good as the ones my grandma made.

Do you have a good sugar cookie recipe to try or can you provide any insight on this one? I'm dying for some homemade sugar cookies, plus I love channeling my inner child by using cookie cutters!
