MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Meet Melinda McDermott, Founder of Elevate Hope House, A faith-based non-profit that has been supporting single moms and their children in crisis since the pandemic.

Elevate Hope House provides hybrid transitional housing and programming for families in crisis. In other words, they are more than a shelter. Mothers and their children can stay with Elevate Hope House for up to two years while they work on self-sufficiency skills and achievements so that when they leave the program - they won't return to the streets or feel alone anymore. They'll have a community and the skills they need to survive, be happy, and thrive with their kids.

ELEVATE HOPE HOUSE

We asked Melinda WHY she wanted to create Elevate Hope House. This was her response:

'I created Elevate Hope House because of my own story. I was a single mom at 20 and had a great support system of family & friends and mentors. I was able to work full-time, go to school full-time, buy my own house for my son and myself... But as I grew up, I realized what an anomaly I was, and how fortunate I was to have a community around me that cared about me and my son.  Elevate is the support I had; for moms that need it... so they can build community and relationships now and for years to come.'

Melinda and her team opened their first home to three families in the Summer of 2020 and have been serving families with both housing and programming ever since.

'This past year we were blessed with a new partnership with Spring Lake Park High School. They currently have a construction trades class that is in the middle of building us our 2nd home in their parking lot! Once done - prayerfully by the end of November, we will be moving this home to a donated lot to serve more families before the snow flies. It has been really cool to share with the students that not only are they building a house and learning a trade which will also open doors for their future career, but they are building with purpose - providing a home for moms their age/not much older in the community and their kids.' Melinda said.

Crowded House at The Ledge Amphitheater, 2024

The Australian 80s/90s pop band Crowded House brought their Gravity Stairs Tour to celebrate the release of their 8th studio album by the same name to Waite Park. Lead singer Neil Finn's son, Liam opened the show with his solo work and then joined the band later. The photo gallery below captures the fun of the night.
