The Benton County Fairgrounds are hiding a secret. They are home to the Miller Buick GMC Arena (Sports Arena East), where the Granite City Lumberjacks play their home hockey games. Right now, the team is 9-0 and just came off a weekend sweep of Mason City.

The Lumberjacks, who play in the NA3HL, have been competing for championships the last few seasons, and it's looking like this might be another banner-raising year. If you aren't familiar with the NA3HL, "The NA3HL began back in the early 1980's as the Junior B level Central States Hockey League (CSHL). In 2007, the CSHL changed from Junior B to Tier III Junior A under the USA Hockey classification system."

The Lumberjacks beat Mason City this weekend to improve to 9-0, and Saturday night's game wasn't even close, with the Jacks winning 10-1. Friday night the Jack's doubled up the Toro's 6-3.

Part of the reason the team is seeing the success that it is this year is that the goal-scoring seems to be well spread out. Looking at the stats for the Jack's before the weekend the team had 4 players tied with 10 points apiece. Parker Comstock, Easton Portner, Justin Lesser, and Seth Terhell.

Goaltending has been pretty good for the Jack's too. They have a familiar name in the net, Nick Hansen from Cathedral is one of the goalies on the team this year.

If you are looking for something to do taking in a game from one of our local teams, is a great way to spend some time.

Looking ahead at the Lumberjack's schedule they are traveling down to the Twin Cities on Friday to play the newest team in the division the Minnesota Moose, and on Saturday the team is back home to take on Willmar.
