ST. CLOUD -- The Diocese of St. Cloud is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The announcement came Wednesday after Bishop Donald Kettler met with pastors and trustees from all 131 parishes to discuss the ongoing lawsuits against the diocese.

Since the Minnesota Child Victims Act ended in May 2016, the Diocese had a total of 74 civil claims against them.

Kettler says:

"this is the best way to ensure that available resources will be distributed equitably to all victims and survivors, while allowing the diocese to continue its vital ministries. I ask you to continue to pray for healing for all victims and survivors of clergy sexual abuse."

It is not expected that reorganization would affect the normal operations of parishes or Catholic schools in the diocese.

No date has been set for the filing.
