The weather is starting to warm up, and with the fishing opener just a few weeks away, I've been trying to do some homework on where I'd like to spend some time this summer. I've never been trout fishing, but it's been on my list to try for some time. As I looked online for some lakes to try this summer, I spotted that Saint Augusta is home to one of the top trout fishing creeks in the state.

Central Minnesotans Don't Have To Go Far For Trout

Luxemburg Creek, which runs roughly 6 miles before it joins Johnson Creek, is one of the best spots to fish for brown trout. The stream itself isn't large, as it sits roughly 10-15' at the widest point, but those who want to toss a line in shouldn't have a problem catching some brown trout.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, "Naturally reproducing brown trout are the only species present. Trout have not been stocked in Luxemburg Creek since the 1970s. In 2018, brown trout captured by electrofishing ranged in size from 3.2 to 13.8 inches, with an average length of 8.5 inches for yearling and older fish and 4.3 inches for young-of-year fish. A total of seven percent of the captured brown trout were 10 inches or larger."

If you are looking to give brown trout a shot this year, you should know that portions of the creek aren't accessible to the public, but the Minnesota DNR website has listed some open places, which are also marked by signs.

"Access to Luxemburg Creek is available on DNR angling easements within the Cherrywood Estates development and extending upstream for approximately 2,000 feet. Signs are posted at the beginning and end of easement corridors and along the outside easement boundaries."

When is the opener this year?

The Minnesota fishing opener in 2025 is on Saturday, May 10th. Which marks the start of the walleye, northern pike, bass, and trout-in-lakes season.
