Today we're going to offer you five of the most requested songs from the 98.1 Country Classic Radio Show.  Today we're featuring Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Dave and Sugar and Crystal Gayle.

 


 

Johnny Cash - "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" - 1958

 

 

This song was written by Johnny Cash and released in December of 1958.  It tells the story of a young cowboy who ignores the advice from his mother, gets into a gun fight at a saloon and is killed.  The song peaked at #1 on the country chart and stayed there for six weeks.  In the news while Don't Take Your Guns to Town was moving up the country chart in early 1959, Fidel Castro was interviewed by CBS Edward R. Murrow and just ten days later on February 16th,  Castro named himself Premier of Cuba after overthrowing Batista.

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm, a boy filled with wonderlust who really meant no harm.

 


 

Roy Clark - "Honeymoon Feelin'" - 1974

 

 

Honeymoon Feelin' is a single recorded by Roy Clark from the Roy Clark: The Entertainer album.  The song reached number four on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  In the news, Nelson Rockerfeller was appointed Vice President as Gerald Ford became President after Richard Nixon's resignation.

Because of gasoline shortage, the nation goes on daylight saving time all year to save fuel.  I still get that honeymoon feelin' after all these years, my heart goes reeling.

 


 

Glen Campbell - "Sunflower" - 1977

 

 

Sunflower was written by Neil Diamond and recorded by Glen Campbell.  The song was released in June of 1977 from the album Southern Nights.  The song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot Country Chart.  In the news, ground breaking ceremonies were taking place for President Kennedy's Library and convicted Martin Luther King assassin James Earl Ray was recaptured after his escape from prison on June 13th.

Dave and Sugar - "Golden Tears" - 1979

 

 

Golden Tears was written by John Schweers and recorded by the country trio Dave and Sugar.  The song was released in January of 1979 from the album Stay With Me: Golden Tears.   Golden Tears reached number one on Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles Chart.  In the news the Supreme Court struck down a law requiring doctors performing an abortion to try and preserve lives of potentially viable fetuses and on January 12th a record blizzard struck the Midwest, including Minnesota, killing over 100 people.

Crystal Gayle - "Ready for the Times to get Better" - 1978

 

 

Ready for the Times to get Better was written by Allen Reynolds and recorded by Crystal Gayle.  The tune was released in January of 1978 from the album Crystal.  The single peaked at #1 on the country chart.  In the news Pope Paul VI dies at 80 on August 6th and Muriel Humphrey was appointed to fill her late husbands senate seat on January 25th.
