The Best Example of Sportsmanship Ever [VIDEO]
In this day and time, it is sometimes tough to find a high school student that cares more about “doing the right thing” than winning. Through the years I have seen high school athletes cry, curse, display fits of rage, even show signs of violence when they didn’t win. This doesn’t apply to all athletes, but it is something we see quite often. What we don’t see a lot of is true sportsmanship.
Playing sports is supposed to teach us about being a team and learning that winning isn’t always the most important thing. West Liberty Salem high school runner Meghan Vogel, displayed the ultimate example of sportsmanship when she carried a fallen competitor across the finish line in a recent race.
Meghan knew she wasn’t going to win this particular race, she was in last place. But when she came across Arden McMath, she knew she had to help. Arden had collapsed during the race and was in quite a bit of pain. The rules state that a competitor can not assist another competitor and if anyone does, they will be disqualified.
Meghan put the rules aside and helped Arden continue to the finish line to cheers and applause from the audience. Meghan even let Arden cross the finish line before her since she was already ahead of her in the race. They came in 14th and 15th place and the best part is, the judges decided not to take action against either of them.
