Twins Walk-Off Losers in Season Opener

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Minnesota Twins lost 3-2 in a start-and-stop season opener Monday afternoon to the Baltimore Orioles.

The start of the game was delayed for over an hour and a half due to rain that didn't come -- and then delayed again for an hour and 15 minutes when the rain finally hit.

Twins reliever Kevin Jepsen gave up a two-out walk-off RBI single to Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Orioles their first win of 2016.

One of the few bright spots offensively for the Twins was shortstop Eduardo Escobar, who smacked two doubles and drove in a run. Joe Mauer chipped in two singles and Korean import Byung-ho Park picked up his first major league hit in the contest.

Trevor May had an effective outing in relief, tossing two shutout innings while striking out four but fellow reliever Casey Fien struggled, surrendering two runs in just 2/3 of an inning.

With the loss, the Twins have dropped eight straight season openers.

The two clubs will have tomorrow off before resuming the series on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. Kyle Gibson is scheduled to make the start for the Twins against Baltimore's Yovani Gallardo.
