On this date in 2003, former U.S. President George W. Bush responded to negative comments made about him by Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines.

Maines was quoted in The Guardian's saying "Just so you know ... we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."

The President responded by saying "The Dixie Chicks are free to speak their mind. They can say what they want to say ... They shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don’t want to buy their records when they speak out.”

Maines' comments started a large backlash from people who protested the Dixie Chicks and requested that radio stations throughout the country stop playing their music.

I can't believe this happened 12 years ago already! I remember it like yesterday.
