Important Warning Issued For Northshore Inline Marathon In Minnesota
The 2025 NorthShore Inline Marathon, the world's largest point-to-point inline marathon, is set for September 13 in Duluth, Minnesota, which will bring a lot of people into the area for a full weekend of festivities.
Founded in 1996 by a group of dedicated inline skaters, it has quickly grown to be a major event that draws top-notch competitors, including Olympians, professional hockey players, professional speed skaters, and more.
The Northshore Inline Marathon race course is on the scenic drive between Two Harbors and Duluth on Minnesota's North Shore, following a similar route to Grandma's Marathon. There are also other events, including the NorthShore Wheels Off Half Marathon for runners and the 42k and 21k Rollerski races.
Also taking place near the finish line on the same weekend is Duluth Oktoberfestival, so there will be a flurry of activity in the area, and motorists need to be aware of road closures and detours that will impact travel on race day.

North Shore Inline Marathon Traffic Impact
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says motorists in the area should plan for detours and delays due to detours during the North Shore Inline Marathon on Saturday, September 13.
Officials advise that starting at 6 a.m., I-35 and Highway 61 will be detoured in Duluth to accommodate the marathon. The detours will start at Mesaba Avenue and travel on city streets before returning to the Highway 61 expressway. Closures for the event are expected to be lifted around 2 p.m.
However, ramp and lane closures in downtown Duluth will remain in place and are not expected to reopen until Saturday, September 20.
MnDOT reminds motorists of the following work zone safety tips:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio, and even eating, while in work zones.
- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
- Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at 511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Do the zipper merge.
- Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
