It was announced yesterday that Famous Dave's in Waite Park will be closing its doors at the end of the business day on Saturday. The chain has been open in Waite Park for the past 12 years according to WJON.

I can't be the only person who was shocked to find out the chain was closing suddenly. I am a BBQ lover and the news hit me pretty hard. I mean, there was no warning. I was just at the restaurant the other day and things seemed normal.

I had the opportunity to meet the man who started the chain when I was in college. Dave Anderson was in town for the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in 2010. I'll never forget that experience because I remember being in awe of his story. Famous Dave was a shy kid who got his start making food for his Native American tribe. Over the years he trained himself to be more confident and outgoing. If you've ever seen him speak, you know that he has a big stage presence and a charisma with his audience. Dave ended up selling his chain. But, his legend and contribution to the world of BBQ lived on.

So, it's safe to say I was extra heartbroken to hear the news yesterday. Is it a sign of the times? We've seen many local big businesses leave the area recently that have had a long history in our community; Sears, Herbergers, Shopko,  DB Searles, Mom's Cinnamon Rolls--just to name a few. Yes, there are businesses opening in the area, but the list of businesses leaving after being open so long is concerning.

This is a good reminder for all of us to keep our dollars local and support local businesses in our area. If you have any Famous Dave's certificates or Pig Bucks, use them before they close their doors on Saturday.
