Today is the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s birth. He was born January 8, 1935. “Kentucky Rain” --- featuring pianist Ronnie Milsap and written by Eddie Rabbitt -- scored a number one on the country chart.

In the news in 1970:

  • The first jumbo jet -- the Boeing 747 --  goes into service
  • The first Earth Day is held on April 22
  • The floppy disc is invented

David Houston and Tammy Wynette – “My Elusive Dreams” -- 1967

 

 

Written by Billy Sherrill and Curly Puttman, a duet by David Houston and Tammy Wynette. It was a number one country hit in October 1967.

In the news in 1967:

  • Biafra secedes from Nigeria in May
  • The first Super Bowl is played between Green Bay and Kansas City -- the Packers win, 35-to-10.

 

I followed you to Texas I followed you to Utah, we didn’t find it there, so we moved on I went with you to Alabama, things looked good in Birmingham.

 


 

Dottie West – “Here Comes my Baby” -- 1964

 

 

This song was the first song to be written by Dottie West and her then husband, Bill.  The song made it to number ten on the Billboard country chart.

In the news in 1964:

  • The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. receives the Nobel Peace Prize

Trisha Yearwood – “She’s in Love with the Boy” -- 1991

 

 

This song is written by Jon Ims, it topped the chart at number one and stayed there for two weeks.  The first of five number ones for Trisha Yearwood.

  • The journalist Terry Anderson is released after years of captivity as a hostage in Beirut

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – “Dance Little Jean” -- 1983

 

 

This song for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band became a top ten hit when it reached number nine on the Billboard Hot Country Chart. It was written by Jimmy Ibbotson.

In the news in 1983:

  • The United States invades Grenada on October 25th
  • The US Space Shuttle the Challenger is launched on its maiden flight
