I remember being ten years old and idolizing Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Faith Hill and NSYNC. I remember thinking that boys had cooties and the school year would never end.

I'm still a kid at heart and sometimes I get a little sad when I see kids trying to grow up too fast.

I was on Facebook the other day and noticed my ten-year-old cousin posted a link to a quiz called "Why Am I Still Single." I sat and thought about it for a second. Why would a ten-year-old be concerned with their relationship status? Is it even possible to have one when you're ten?

I decided to respond to her. I said, "You're still single because you're TEN. Ten-year-olds should be playing barbies and watching Disney channel. They should be playing in the mud outside lol they shouldn't be thinking about why they are "single" or putting on makeup. I was in high school before I had my first boyfriend. Don't grow up too fast, Haley. Just enjoy being TEN."

She responded, "Heck no I hate barbies lol n I don't like Disney channel I like mtv omg Ashli Gerdes haha."

At this point, I slapped my forehead with my my palm. She had completely missed my point. It made me sad to think that she along with others her age have a view like this. A few days later, my ten-year-old sister Taylor decided to interject her opinion.

She said, "Ashli Gerdes ten-year-olds don't do that. Do u see me with barbies or watching Disney ... anymore?"

This made me sad at first and then I started laughing because I remembered something. I just caught her telling a little white lie. I sat for a second and then decided to respond with, "I was at your house on Monday...and yes, you were doing that."

She was playing with dolls and watching Disney Channel just a few days prior. I kind of felt bad for "outting" her. But at the same time I think she needs to know and others her age need to know that it's OK to be a kid. I don't know why kids feel so much pressure to grow up so fast. Maybe it's because of social media or the media in general. I don't know why they feel a need to lie about doing kid things.

It's OK to be ten! It's OK to watch Disney Channel, play in the mud and think boys have cooties. Kids need to just enjoy being young because they'll  never be able to get it back.
