What Are The Odds of Dying from an Animal in Minnesota?
When we think of deadly animals in Minnesota we probably think of critters like bears, wolves, or cougars -- but you might be surprised at which animals ACTUALLY cause the most deaths here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The five animals that are most like to cause your death in Minnesota:
- Deer
- Bees/Wasps/Hornets
- Dog
- Cow
- Horse
Not exactly what you had in mind? Of course deer-related deaths are mostly from accidents; not vicious deer attacks. :) Bees, wasps, and hornets can cause deadly allergic reactions -- putting them high on the list. Dogs, cows, and horses aren't known for being man-eaters (although dogs are basically domesticated wolves), but come in high on the list just because there are so many of them, and they call all do she damage.
The odds of being killed by an animal in Minnesota is about 1 in 2,000,000. Montana is the most dangerous, Massachusetts is the least.
The truth is, the animals we fear in America the most, are the least likely to hurt us. Bears, sharks, mountain lions, alligators, wolves, snakes, scorpions, and spiders -- COMBINED -- don't even come close to the #1 killer on the Earth: The mosquito! Even man can't compete. Mosquitoes are responsible nearly 800,000 deaths worldwide every year. Man (homicides, war, etc.) only accounts for about 475,000 deaths in an average year.
Be careful out there & beware of the Whitetail. :)
