The Minnesota Gophers (3-0) remained unbeaten by beating visiting Colorado State 31-24 yesterday afternoon in Minneapolis. The #6 SJU Johnnies (3-1) fell to visiting #4 St. Thomas 33-21 yesterday in Collegeville. The SCSU Huskies (1-3) lost 23-22 yesterday at Wayne State.
Both the SCSU Huskies (1-1) and SJU Johnnies (2-0) headed south today to face foes in Iowa, while the Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-0) played at home for the second straight week. The result, three wins for the local college teams on the gridiron.
St. John's (10-1) takes on St. Thomas (11-0) this afternoon in St. Paul in second round action for the NCAA Division III football playoffs -- with the two teams meeting in the postseason for the first time. The Gophers (5-6) host Wisconsin (8-3) at TCF Bank Stadium with Paul Bunyan's ax on the line.
The University of Minnesota says it has signed Tracy Claeys to a three-year contract as head football coach. Claeys succeeds his friend Jerry Kill, who resigned his position on Oct. 28 due to health reasons.
