Join me this Sunday,  May 3rd at 11 am for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring the Statler Brothers. Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune and Don Reid retired from concerts and tours in 2002.  The Statler Brothers originally performed gospel music at local churches.  They originally billed themselves as 'The Four Star Quartet,' then later they called themselves 'The Kingsmen'  and finally, after all that 'The Statler Brothers' were born.  The band named themselves after a brand of facial tissue they had noticed in a hotel room and have been called 'America's Poets.'

Two of their best known songs are Flowers on the Wall, which also happened to be their first major hit.  It was written by Lew Dewitt and the song peaked in January 1966, spending four weeks at #2 on Billboards Hot Singles Chart.  The song was also used in the soundtrack to 1994's film Pulp Fiction.

Bed of Roses is their second popular country hit.  Harold Ried wrote the song which was released in 1970.  The song reached #9 on Billboards Hot Country Singles Chart.

She was a scarlet woman by the people who would go to church but left me in the streets.

They earned the number one spot on the Billboard Country Chart four times.  Phil Balsley and the Reid brothers reside in Staunton, Virginia while Jimmy Fortune lives in Nashville, where he is continuing his music career as a solo act.
