You and I have a date on Sunday August 23rd at 11 am for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight where we will be featuring Randy Travis.

Randy Travis was born in Marshville, North Carolina on May 4, 1959.  His given name is actually Randy Traywick and he is the second of six children. He was raised on a farm where he was training horses and working cattle by the tender age of six.

At age 18 he met Elizabeth Hatcher who became his legal guardian; she saw great promise in him and spent a few years grooming him to become a country music star.  In 1981, they moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

Randy re-released On the Other Hand, which skyrocketed to #1 in 1982.  Throughout the 1980’s he gained hit songs, membership in the Grand Ole Opry, a Grammy Award and he won Country Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year award.

In 1991 Randy married long time manager Elizabeth Hatcher in a private ceremony in Maui.  In the 1990’s he concentrated on an acting career.  He won roles in made for TV movies and film.

Randy and Elizabeth divorced on October 29, 2010.  In July 2013, at age 54, he was diagnosed with having congestive heart failure.  While being treated for his condition, he suffered a stroke.  Earlier this year Randy married Mary Davis.  The two have been engaged since before his devastating stroke in July 2013.
