You and I have a date on Sunday, July 26th to remember the music and life of Mel McDaniel on the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight at 11 am.

Mel McDaniel was born in Checotah, Oklahoma on September 6, 1942; it’s the same town that contemporary country artist Carrie Underwood is from.  He began his career playing Oklahoma night clubs.

In Nashville he landed a job as a demo singer and songwriter.  His career finally took off with Louisiana Saturday Night, his first Top Ten hit peaking at #7.  In 1985 he scored his only number one hit with Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.  Other hits include Big Ole Brew, Stand Up and more.

On November 14, 1996 McDaniel had a near fatal fall into an orchestra pit in Lafayette, Louisiana. He never recovered from his injuries, which officially ended his touring career.  In June of 2009, Me suffered a heart attack but made a full recovery.  More health problems occurred on February 19, 2011 when he was diagnosed with lung cancer.   He died March 31, 2011 as a result of the disease.

Mel McDaniel had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since January of 1986.
