On Sunday December 13th at 11 am join me for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight.  We'll shine the spotlight on Kathy Mattea.  We get started at 9 am with the Country Classic Show at 98.1 Minnesota’s New Country, online and on your mobile device

Kathy Mattea will appear at the college of St. Benedict in St. Joseph on Saturday, December 12th as part of CSB-SJU Fine Arts show.

Kathy started her musical career as a bluegrass artist but soon switched to country when she moved to Nashville.  She struggled until she cut a sweet down-to-earth song written by Naci Griffith called Love at the Five and Dime, a number three country hit in 1986.  That song defined her for country radio.

She followed that song with a string of top ten singles until her smash number one single, Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses, which took a 1989 CMA Award for Best Single. Eighteen Wheels remains her biggest chart hit.

My second favorite song by Kathy is Where’ve You Been?, which her husband, Jon Vezner, co-wrote with Don Henry.  The song reached number ten on the country chart and won her a 1990 Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal.

Kathy hails from South Charleston, West Virginia.  She still records and tours and she is scheduled in January 2016 to be a part of a great country music cruise that will feature other country artists like Kenny Rogers, Oak Ridge Boys and many others.
