I invite you to join me Sunday morning October 2nd at 11 am for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight, as we feature Johnny Horton.

We get started at 9 am with the Country Classic radio show at 98.1 FM Minnesota’s New Country, online and on your mobile device.

Johnny Horton was born in Los Angeles, California April 30, 1925.  His best-known song “The Battle of New Orleans,” was written by Jimmy Driftwood.  The song reached number one on the country chart and crossed over to the pop chart.  Horton’s first hit, also a number one hit in 1959, was “When It’s Springtime in Alaska (It’s Forty Below).”  In 1960, Horton had two other successes with "Sink the Bismark" and "North to Alaska."

Johnny Horton was married twice. His first marriage to Donna Cook ended in divorce.  In September 1953, he married Billie Jean Jones, the widow of country music singer Hank Williams Senior.  She was Williams' second wife.  Horton and Billie Jean had two daughters.

On November 4, 1960, Horton was involved in a car crash after a concert in Austin, Texas.  He died on the way to the hospital, November 5, 1960.  Horton’s funeral was held at Shreveport on November 8, 1960.  Horton left behind a musical legacy that still plays on for all of us to enjoy.
