Join me at 11 am on Sunday February 8th for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight as we feature Don Gibson.

Don Gibson has been responsible for writing at least three of the most famous songs in country music history and for helping to define the sound and studio style of modern country music.  He released more than seventy charted records between 1956 and 1980.

He was born April 3, 1928 to a sharecropper.  Don quit school by the second grade but found himself ill suited for a farmer's life.  Music was his out.

In 1957, Don ventured to Nashville to work with Chet Atkins and recorded Oh-Lonesome Me and I Can't Stop Loving You.  That session resulted in a double sided hit on both the country and pop charts.

I personally am a big fan of Don Gibson and I would say my favorite song is Blue Blue Day, which was written and recorded by him.  This song went to #1 for two weeks on the country chart and remained on the chart for six months.

These are my favorite lyrics from the song:

It's been a blue, blue day, I feel like runnin' away, I feel like runnin' away from from it all.

He was a very talented songwriter and was nicknamed 'The Sad Poet' because he frequently wrote songs that told of loneliness and lost love.  Don also wrote and recorded Sweet Dreams, which became a major 1963 crossover hit for Patsy Cline.

In 2001 he was inducted into the country music Hall of Fame.  Following his death from natural causes on November 17, 2003, he was buried in Sunset Cemetery in his hometown of Shelby, North Carolina.

Join me every Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm for more country classics on the Country Classic Show.  Remember we always take your requests at 320-252-9897 or email dick@98country.com.
