Today on The Country Classic Spotlight we’re featuring country music’s most successful female vocalist of the 1970s and 1980s at 11:00 am, Barbara Mandrell.

Born Christmas Day 1948 in Houston, Texas, Barbara Mandrell was only 13 years old she toured with the great Patsy Cline. Later Mandrell and her family formed the Mandrell FamilyBandd and toured the country with great success. The band consisted of her two sisters Irlene and Louise, her dad Irby on guitar, her mother Mary Ellen on bass. The drummer was Ken Dudney who she later married in 1967.  Barbara went on to become a country music superstar.  Her first breakthrough came in 1973 with the single “The Midnight Oil” it was about a woman who is doing the cheating.  In 1978, she scored her first number one hit, “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.  In the early 1980’s she released a string of hit recordings including her most famous becoming her signature song, “I

In 1978, she scored her first number one hit, “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.  In the early 1980s, she released a string of hit recordings including her most famous becoming her signature song, “I Was Country (When Country Wasn’t Cool),” with some help from George Jones.  She went on to do television work with her sisters, she eventually won seven American Music Awards.  In September 1984, she had a brush with death after being involved in a serious head on collision on a freeway, her two children were with her they all survived.  Barbara and her husband Ken are the parents of three children, the youngest child, Nathaniel was born after the auto crash in 1985.
