Join me at 11 a.m. on Sunday February 9th for the Sunday Morning Country Classic Spotlight featuring Teri Gibbs.  The Country Classic Show kicks off at 9 a.m.

In 1981 Terri Gibbs became the first artist ever to win the Country Music Association Horizon Award for up and coming performers.  In 1980 she won the Academy of Country Music's Best New Female Vocalist Award.

She was born June 15, 1954 in Miami, Florida.  She lost her eyesight as a newborn in an incubator accident.  After graduation from high school in 1972 in Augusta, Georgia, she began to make local, independently produced records and appeared on Augusta area country music shows.  Her early group, The Terri Gibbs Trio, performed locally around Georgia. Her demonstration tapes got her a regular lounge gig at a steak and ale restaurant in Augusta, Georgia.

Gibbs' breakthrough 1980 single, Somebody's Knockin' as well as the 1981 album by the same title sent her on her way.  That first single hit #8 on the Billboard charts and became her biggest hit.  She also recorded, Ashes to Ashes, another Top Ten hit and several other marginal hits.  Terri recorded a Gospel album in 1987 titled Turnaround and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1988.

She married Grovetown, Georgia City Councilman David Daughtry on April 28, 1988 and remained married to him until his death in February 2008.  They had one son, David Wayne Daughtry II, born October 20, 1989.

Terri still tours occasionally, performing mostly gospel music.
