Country music is not nearly as much a hotbed of political activism as some other genres, but that doesn't mean that some country stars don't have strong opinions about the 2016 presidential election.

The election has been one of the most contentious in modern memory, and most singers have wisely stayed out of the fray, avoiding the public back-and-forth that comes along with voicing an opinion. But some singers have braved the storms of criticism to offer their opinions on the candidates, running the gamut of political and social views.

One country legend is firmly in the corner of billionaire developer, former reality TV star and Republican nominee Donald Trump, while another icon whom you might have expected to support him remains noncommittal about the controversial candidate. A rising star who just rose to prominence in the last year went so far as to perform at the Republican National Convention in 2016, while two more singers with close ties to Trump were noticeably absent.

Trump has dominated the conversation among country fans this election season, which is understandable, since country is a primarily conservative genre. But various stars have weighed in from a number of different angles, some of which their fans might find surprising. One thing a lot of singers seem to agree on is how fractured the election cycle is in 2016, and how Americans need to take a step back and treat each other with more respect as we debate about the future of the country.
