Starry Stonewart Discovered in More Minnesota Lakes

PAYNESVILLE -- The invasive species Starry Stonewart has been found in more Minnesota lakes.

The DNR says the invasive weed has been discovered near the southwest boat access in Rice Lake. Rice Lake is connected to the already infested Lake Koronis in Paynesville.

A more extensive search is being conducted to determine the extent of the infestation and potential for treatment.

Starry Stonewart are a grass-like micro algae which can produce dense mats and interfere with lake use and choke out native plants.

Starry Stonewart was also discovered in Moose Lake in Beltrami County and Lake Winnibigoshish in Itasca and Cass counties.
