SAUK RAPIDS -- Snowmobile trails in Minnesota officially open December 1st, but weather obviously plays a key role in whether the conditions make them rideable.

Despite approximately 4-6 inches of snow on the ground, most snowmobile clubs haven't yet brought their trail groomers out. Mike Waseka is the Benton County Snowmobile Club Trail Administrator and Treasurer. He says they will likely get out and pack the trails once swamps and creeks freeze solid.

Waseka says we could use another 6-8 inches of snow to greatly improve the snowcover on the trails. He says if this weekend's precipitation comes in the form of rain, it will cause the snow to turn to ice and set the stage for slippery conditions throughout the rest of the season.
