I've never given this much thought about this until now.

I have a good friend who refuses to wear anything new until after she washes it.  She used to work in retail and saw things that freaked her out.  Truthfully, I just figured she was a bigger germ-phobe than me.  I'm starting to rethink that.

The Wall Street Journal published an article on this very topic and they actually interviewed a dermatologist who gave some interesting (albeit disgusting) insight. He claims that your skin could be exposed to dyes and there have been some cases of lice being transmitted.  Oh my gosh, nasty!

If that's not enough the article also talks about exposure to other infectious diseases and the possibility of the clothes molding while in transit from the factory to the store.  For lack of a better way of putting it, this totally gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I love buying new clothes and wearing them right away, but I'm going to plan ahead and throw them in the washer first from now on.
