ST. CLOUD - The #9 ranked St. Cloud State University Huskies are off to a great start, defeating Bemidji State University 3-2 to open the season.

Sophomore forward Joey Benik would get the first two goals in the action, scoring in the first and second period to make it 2-0 Huskies.

 

Bemidji would keep things interesting and break up the shut-out by scoring twice in the second period with goals from Markus Gerbrandt and Cory Ward to tie the game at 2-2.

St. Cloud would get a go-ahead shorthand goal at the end of the second period from Nic Dowd to make it 3-2. The Huskies would hold on in the 3rd period, sealing the victory in front of over 4,000 fans.

The Huskies outshot the Beavers 29-16 last night, while going 1-6 on the power play.

It was a special occasion for St. Cloud as they celebrated their first game in the newly renovated Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The new renovations included a new entrance and ticket lobby, luxury suites, new concession areas, and the Husky Den club room.

The two teams will be back at it tonight at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with the puck drop at 7:07 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or at the SCSU tickets website.
