This has sparked quite the debate.

According to NBC Philadelphia, a school in Pennsylvania has put together a dress code for prom.  The shortened version of the code is that students will wear formal attire that is suitable for their gender and dresses have to meet certain requirements.  Okay, sounds pretty reasonable, right?

The school took things one step further and now requires that a picture of the dresses be submitted for approval prior to purchasing tickets for prom.  I think that's a little over the top.

I understand that the school wants to deter people from wearing tasteless clothing to prom, so a dress code requiring formal wear doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

As far as the dresses go, I would say a few things about that.  First, many girls are buying their dresses months in advance and it sounds like the new guidelines just came out within the last few weeks.  It seems ridiculous that the school would do this so close to prom season.  How many people have dresses that now have to be returned or if they can't return them, have to be drastically altered?

I also wouldn't think that you would have that many people wearing inappropriate clothing to begin with.  My sister went to prom two years ago and we went to the Grand March. Yes, the girls dresses were beautiful and some of them were definitely a little more showy than what girls were wearing when I went to school.  I wouldn't say any of them were overly provocative or distasteful.

Maybe I'm totally naive on this one but I think the picture policy is a bit ridiculous.  What do you think -- should the school be able to decide whether or not a dress is appropriate for prom?
