The years before Johnny Cash's death he found a new audience that wasn't even alive when Cash was in his prime, the result was some very interesting music and interpretations.

Such is evident in his 1994 release simply called "Cash" that seemed to have more interest from the alternative crowd than Country.  He continuned his "second coming" with a few more albums all produced with Rick Rubin.

"American IV: The Man Comes Around" in 2004 was a compilation of originals and covers from artists like The Eagles, The Beatles, Depeche Mode, Sting, and perhaps the most interesting of them all Nine Inch Nails.

Cash took the song "Hurt" and made it even darker and more sad than it already was.  NIN Frontman Trent Reznor was apparently brought to tears by the rendition.  It goes to show again how closely related Rock and Country can become.

Here's the original version by Nine In Nails.
