Way back before his reality singing competition start and his debut single ‘Drinkin’ Me Lonely,’ Chris Young made a quick cameo in another reality star’s country music video. He was just 18 at the time, and he made his time on screen count.
Buddy Jewell’s 2003 hit ‘Sweet Southern Comfort’ describes his love for the south and “where it all begins.” The video epitomizes those feelings and Young appears about 1:35, acting out the lyrics “kissing Gary William’s sister on the porch homecoming week.” That’s right, Young’s on-screen roll was a lip-locking scene. The long hair may surprise you, but if you look closely you can see Young’s facial features before his big kiss.
The song itself made it to the top three on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and was a big hit for Jewell but the video appearance didn’t do much for Young’s career. It wasn’t until 2006 that he was really discovered. That was the year Young won ‘Nashville Star,’ the reality singing competition. The irony is that Jewell was also on the show. He appeared on the very first season of ‘Nashville Star’ and walked away as its very first winner in 2003.
Perhaps it’s not too ironic. Young and Jewell were friends, although he insists the older singer didn’t know anything about his audition. Young also appeared in Reba McEntire‘s video for ‘I’ll Be,’ a song from 2000.
