Now that the football season is here, there's college ball on Saturdays, professional football Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Monday night and later in the season Thursday nights. While we are surrounded by men in tight pants, there are a few things we can take away from the games and apply to our relationships every day.

Teamwork

Just like an actual team on the field needs to be on the same page and work together, so do you and your partner; especially if you're parents.  This can also be applied to a coworker situation. Christian Ponder is going to throw downfield to Adrian Peterson and Ponder is going to trust that AP is going to be there to catch it, and he also understands that there will be defensemen that want to knock him down and get in Adrian's way, but they have a plan for what they're going to do in that situation. Understand your role in the team and trust others to do their jobs.

Discipline

Being a professional athlete means they need to be disciplined. It also requires sacrifice and hard work. Professional athletes need to eat well, work out and hone their craft. The same goes for being in a relationship. Sure, it would be a waste if Glen and I hadn't gotten together and we're best friends, but we also work very hard on our relationship. We worked hard to get married, but we know we need to also work hard to stay married. We make it a point to spend time together doing fun things that the other one enjoys, we compromise, and we communicate.

Celebrate

Although pro football is trying to cut down on "excessive celebrating", you always see teams celebrating the little things. First downs, long runs, completed passes, touchdowns; they celebrate them all. The two of you should also celebrate the little things. Finishing a home improvement project, working together to get the house packed for a move, busting your butts all week so you can go on vacation a little earlier than planned all deserve a swat on the tush or a pat on the back. Celebrations keep the team motivated for the next big challenge.

Perseverance

Just like teams winning and losing games, couples go through ups and downs as well. The important thing is to know that if you stick with it, perseverance will pay off in the long run.
