ST. CLOUD -- With tax season quickly approaching, authorities are reminding you to be alert of mail theft.

Mail theft is an year round issue but increases during tax season as thieves know your personal information will be on your W-2 forms.

Stolen Identity Tax Fraud is when someone steals your identity, files a bogus tax return in your name before you do and collects a refund check.

Police say to avoid being a victim of mail theft you should consider receiving your W-2 forms electronically, check your mailbox every day, or ask a neighbor to get your mail and check for suspicious activity if you're away.
