Sci-fi, horror or comedy? Take your pick. All three genres have movies opening in wide-release this weekend.

In ‘John Carter,’ the war-weary title character is inexplicably transported to Mars and becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet.

‘Silent House’ is the story of a young woman who finds herself sealed inside her family’s secluded lake house, where panic turns to terror as events become increasingly ominous.

And in ‘A Thousand Words,’ Eddie Murphy stars as fast-talking literary agent Jack McCall, whose life comes unglued after a magical tree mysteriously appears in his backyard.
